Where Grab Bars Should Be Placed

The most useful grab bar locations in a bathroom — based on movement, not generic templates.

Think in paths, not products

Grab bars support transitions: sitting to standing, stepping over a tub edge, moving from a walker to a toilet. Walk through the bathroom the way it is actually used.

Common locations

These are starting points — every home is different.

  • Near the toilet — horizontal bar on the side wall, or a vertical bar for rising from the seat
  • In the shower — vertical bar at the entrance; horizontal bar on the back or side wall
  • By the tub — vertical bar for stepping in; angled bar for lowering down

Height is personal

Clinical guidelines exist, but the best height matches the person using the bar. We measure and confirm on site — especially when a therapist or family member is involved.
